Life is all about the relationships we build. While the vast majority of them are superficial and lacking in depth, it is the ones that run deeper that make a real difference to our lives. If you are looking to form more lasting relationships, this article is here to give you a brief overview of how to do this. Like anything else, you will get out what you put in. Building meaningful relationships isn’t something that can be done overnight, but the rewards that you experience could be significant.

Meet More People

The more different types of people you meet, the more likely it is that you will find those who you are able to build strong relationships with. After all, you are looking for overlaps in personality, interests and values. People tend to become set in their ways and simply stick with the relationships they have built after a certain amount of time. But if you take the time to expand your social circle, the rewards are much more likely to be ready and waiting for you.

Talk About What Matters

What matters is a concept that varies wildly from person to person, but if you always keep your conversations shallow and trivial, you are much less likely to get beneath the surface to discover more about who that person really is. Sometimes, when you have these deep conversations, you will find that you don’t have that spark of connection, but on other occasions, you can start to build up a lasting relationship.

Show Vulnerability

Most people travel through their lives giving off the impression of being strong and not showing their true emotions. All human beings have flaws, and showing these flaws to other people is something that can be very challenging, but also very rewarding. Some people find that counselling helps them out in this respect. Not showing your flaws to other people means that you are always hiding to a certain degree.

Align Thoughts, Words and Actions

The difference between thoughts, words and actions can often be vast, but people will find it difficult to trust you if you don’t have integrity. For example, are you willing to provide them with honest feedback, and can they trust you to keep your promises? The gap between the person you are in your mind and the one you are in real life is a difficult one to bridge, but if you are constantly trying to spare people’s feelings, you are not being true to yourself or to them.

Provide Support

Connections between people grow when they feel like they can rely on each other for support. This may just be a few kind words or grander actions, but the art of building relationships depends on you being there for each other.

Strong relationships have the advantage of making you feel more fulfilled, as well as more connected with the entire world in general so they are always worth putting in the extra effort to build.
